China may be the manufacturer of the world, but many are frustrated that Chinese companies are better at knocking off the originals than coming up with innovative ideas.

Kaifu Lee, the former head of 谷歌 China, wrote on Weibo, “Chinese companies themselves will perform as well as Apple, but their products won’t match up.” He said that Chinese schools focus too much on memorization and don’t encourage critical thinking.

“It’s not that Chinese are not smart or don’t have the potential . Look at Jerry Yang of Yahoo and Steve Chen of YouTube,” he added, referring to the two Internet entrepreneurs who were both born in Taiwan and immigrated to the U.S. at young ages.

Chen Zhiwu, a finance professor at Yale University, said that in Chinese schools, “the first thing the teachers do is to rub down the edges of those students who are different from the crowd”. Actually, teachers should pay more attention to unusual students, discover their unusual talents and find a better way to cultivate them.
耶鲁大学金融学教授陈志武说，在中国的学校，“老师们第一做的就是把每一个独一无二的学生的棱角磨平”。事实上，老师们应该给予独一无二的学生更多的关注，挖掘他们非同一般的才能，用更适合的办法来培养他们。
Scholar Wu Jiaxiang wrote, “If Apple is a fruit on a tree, its branches are the freedom to think and create, and its root is constitutional democracy. An authoritarian nation may be able to build huge projects collectively but will never be able to produce science and technology giants.”
